Percentage questions can look similar while using different bases. Choose what is X percent of Y, X is what percent of Y, percentage change, increase or decrease, or ratio simplification, then verify which value is the reference, how signs are interpreted, and when division by zero makes a result undefined.

Reference value

The denominator defines the meaning of the percentage

To find a part, multiply the base by the rate divided by 100. To ask what percent X is of Y, divide X by Y. Reversing X and Y changes the answer. Label the base in discounts, tax, margins, test scores, and completion rates before entering numbers.

Change

Percentage change uses the old value as the reference and is not symmetric

The change is new minus old, divided by old. A move from 80 to 100 is a 25 percent increase, while returning from 100 to 80 is a 20 percent decrease. When the old value is zero, ordinary percentage change is undefined even though the absolute change is known.

Rate application

Adding and removing the same percentage do not cancel

Increasing 100 by 20 percent gives 120; reducing 120 by 20 percent gives 96 because the second operation uses a new base. Taxes, fees, discounts, markups, and tips can also be applied in different orders. Follow the real calculation rules and round at the required stage.

How do I calculate X percent of Y?

Convert X to a decimal by dividing by 100, then multiply by Y. For example, 25 percent of 240 is 60.

How do I find what percent one value is of another?

Divide the part by the base and multiply by 100. The base is the denominator, so reversing the values changes the result.

How is percentage change calculated?

Subtract old from new, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. Positive and negative results indicate increase or decrease.

What is percentage change when the old value is zero?

The ordinary formula divides by zero and is undefined. Report the absolute change or use a domain-specific alternative with clear wording.

Why do a 20 percent increase and 20 percent decrease not cancel?

They use different bases. Increasing 100 gives 120, and 20 percent of 120 is 24, leaving 96.

Is ratio simplification a percentage calculation?

It is related but different. A ratio compares two quantities and can be reduced by their common factor; converting it to a percentage chooses one side as a base.
