Password strength comes primarily from length, unpredictability, and uniqueness for each account. Choose password or passphrase mode, length, count, character sets, exclusions, separators, and required types, then save the result directly in a reputable password manager and enable multifactor authentication where available.

Length and randomness

Long independent choices matter more than decorative substitutions

A randomly generated string from a sufficiently large alphabet can be strong, while a memorable passphrase needs words selected independently rather than a known quote. Increase length before adding rules that make entry harder. Excluding similar characters can help manual transcription but slightly reduces the available set.

Compatibility

Site-specific character rules are constraints, not universal security guidance

Some systems require uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols, or a maximum length. Use Require each selected type only when needed, and avoid ambiguous symbols for devices or paper transfer. Never reuse a generated result across accounts simply because it satisfies multiple policies.

Storage

The generated value should leave the page for a password manager, not a plain-text file

Copy it directly into the account and manager, verify the saved entry, then clear temporary output. Downloaded text files, screenshots, chat messages, and browser history can expose credentials. Use MFA, protect the password-manager account, and rotate a password after suspected compromise rather than on an arbitrary schedule.

How long should a generated password be?

Use the longest value the service and password manager handle comfortably. Current NIST public guidance emphasizes at least 15 characters for user-created passwords; random manager-generated values can be longer.

Are symbols required for a strong password?

Length, unpredictability, and uniqueness matter most. Include symbols when the service requires them or when they expand an already random alphabet without creating entry problems.

Is a passphrase as strong as a random character password?

It can be strong when it uses enough independently selected words and is unique. A familiar quote, lyric, or personal phrase is predictable and should not be treated the same way.

Should I exclude similar characters?

Do so when you must type or read the password manually. For password-manager autofill, keeping the larger alphabet is usually convenient unless the site rejects characters.

Can I reuse one strong generated password?

No. Reuse lets one breach expose multiple accounts. Generate and store a different password for every service.

Where should I keep generated passwords?

Use a reputable password manager protected by a strong master passphrase and MFA. Avoid plain-text files, screenshots, notes, and chat messages.
