To compress an image to 1 MB, select Choose images, keep Target size at 1 MB, and select Compress. The tool lowers the JPG quality just enough to get each file under 1 MB, and shrinks the dimensions only if that isn't enough. For a different limit, type a new number in Target size, such as 2 MB or 500 KB.
How to compress an image to 1MB
- Choose images. Select Choose images and add up to 50 JPG, PNG or WebP files, such as a set of phone photos.
- Set the target. Target size starts at 1 MB. Switch the unit to KB for limits like 500 KB, or type 2 with MB selected for a 2 MB limit.
- Choose format and width. Keep JPG for uploads and email. Add a Max width, for example 3000 pixels, if you want the photo to keep a higher quality setting.
- Compress and download. Select Compress, compare the original and final sizes, then select Download or Download all (ZIP).
Where a 1 MB limit comes up
Photos from a modern phone camera are often several megabytes each, and plenty of upload forms stop well short of that. Some examples:
- Visa applications. Indian missions, including the Consulate General in Vladivostok and the High Commission in Lilongwe, list the Indian e-Visa photo as a JPEG between 10 KB and 1 MB.
- Website forms. Many contact forms, support tickets, school portals and listing sites cap each attachment at 1 or 2 MB.
- Email and chat. A 1 MB photo is small enough that you can attach several to one email without hitting your provider's limit, and they open quickly on mobile data.
Check the exact wording of the limit. "Less than 1 MB" and "up to 1 MB" sound the same, but a file of exactly 1,024 KB passes only one of them.
How to compress a phone photo to 1 MB
A 12-megapixel phone photo (4000 x 3000) usually fits under 1 MB at full size with quality somewhere around 50-60%. That's fine on a screen, but fine detail such as foliage, text on signs or hair loses some crispness.
For a cleaner result, set Max width to about 3000 pixels. With roughly half the pixels, the same photo fits at around 75% quality or more, and 3000 pixels is still more than any screen shows at once and enough for a standard photo print. The compressor tries quality first, between about 95% and 30%, and only scales the image down in 10% steps if 30% isn't enough, so very large or noisy photos can come out smaller than you expect without a Max width.
iPhone photos saved as HEIC need converting before they can be compressed here, since the tool accepts JPG, PNG and WebP. Run them through HEIC to JPG first. For exact pixel dimensions rather than a file size, use the image resizer.
Compress image to 2MB, 500KB or less than 1MB
The target is just a number, so this page also handles the other common limits. Type the value, pick KB or MB, and compress.
| Limit on the form | Target to type | What to expect for a 12 MP photo |
|---|---|---|
| 2 MB | 1.9 MB | Full size at a good quality setting |
| Less than 1 MB | 950 KB | Full size at medium quality, or 3000 px wide at higher quality |
| 500 KB | 480 KB | Set Max width to about 2000 px for a sharp result |
| 200 KB or less | Use a smaller preset | See the 200 KB compressor |
Typing a little under the limit protects you against sites that count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes instead of 1,024.
Compress PNG to 1MB
Screenshots and exported graphics are often PNGs, and a full-screen PNG from a high-resolution display can easily pass 1 MB. PNG is lossless, so the compressor saves it as JPG or WebP to reach the target. Transparent areas turn white in a JPG.
That conversion suits photos and screenshots of photos. For screenshots of documents, code or interfaces, JPG can add faint smudges around small text. Try Compress PNG first, which keeps the format by reducing the number of colors, and come back here if the file is still too big. Photos that only need a general size cut, with no exact target, can go through Compress JPG.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress an image to less than 1 MB?
Choose the image, set Target size to 950 KB and select Compress. Aiming slightly under 1 MB keeps the file under the limit however the site counts kilobytes.
How do I resize an image to 1 MB without losing quality?
Set Max width to about 3000 pixels before compressing. The photo then fits 1 MB at a high quality setting, and the difference from the original is hard to see on screen.
Can I compress an image to 2 MB or 500 KB here?
Yes. Type 2 with MB selected, or 500 with KB selected, in the Target size field. The tool works the same way for any target.
Can I compress a PNG to 1 MB?
Yes. The PNG is saved as a JPG or WebP under 1 MB, and transparent areas become white in a JPG. For text-heavy screenshots, Compress PNG keeps edges sharper.
Can I compress several photos to 1 MB at once?
Yes. Choose up to 50 images, compress them in one go and save them all with Download all (ZIP).
Is this image compressor to 1 MB free and private?
Yes. It's free with no sign-up or watermark, and your photos are compressed in your browser without being uploaded.
