To generate lorem ipsum, choose an output type (Paragraphs, Sentences, Words, List or HTML), set the Amount, and select Generate Text. Classic lorem ipsum is the default style, and the first sentence starts with "Lorem ipsum". Copy the result with Copy Output or save it with Download TXT or Download HTML.
How to use the lorem ipsum generator
- Choose the output type. Select Paragraphs, Sentences, Words, List or HTML at the top of Generator setup.
- Set the amount. Drag the Amount slider (1 to 50) or type up to 200 in Value. Four paragraphs is the default.
- Pick a style and options. Choose a Text style, and tick extras such as Include headings, Include list items or Return HTML output. The presets set everything in one click.
- Generate and save. Select Generate Text (or press Alt+Enter, Option+Enter on a Mac), then Copy Output, Download TXT or Download HTML.
What is lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is dummy text used to fill a design before the real copy is ready. Because it looks like ordinary text but can't be read, people judge the layout, type size and spacing instead of the words. The standard passage begins Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit and runs for about 70 words.
Lorem ipsum has been used in typesetting since the late 1960s, when Letraset dry-transfer sheets carrying the text made it popular with designers. It later spread into desktop publishing and word processing software. The often-repeated claim that printers used it in the 1500s has no evidence behind it.
What does Lorem Ipsum mean?
Lorem ipsum doesn't mean anything as written. It's scrambled Latin taken from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the ends of good and evil"), a philosophical work Cicero wrote in 45 BC. That part of the book discusses Epicurean ideas about pleasure and pain.
The original sentence reads Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit, roughly "nor is there anyone who loves pain itself, or pursues it, because it is pain." Lorem isn't a Latin word: it's the tail of dolorem (pain) cut in half, so "lorem ipsum" is a clipped form of "dolorem ipsum," meaning "pain itself." Words were dropped, shortened and reordered, and letters were added, so the filler reads as nonsense to anyone who knows Latin.
The source was traced by Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College, who searched classical texts for the rare word consectetur.
Placeholder text generator options
The Classic style picks words at random from the standard lorem ipsum passage, so every generation is different. With Random lengths on, sentences run 6 to 16 words and paragraphs 3 to 7 sentences. Turn it off for even blocks of 10-word sentences and 4-sentence paragraphs, which helps when you're comparing two card designs side by side.
| Text style | What you get | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Classic lorem ipsum | Latin-looking words from the standard passage | Print layouts and neutral mockups |
| Readable filler | English design words such as layout, preview, spacing | Client previews where Latin looks odd |
| Product marketing filler | Words such as premium, secure, dashboard | Product cards and feature lists |
| Startup / SaaS filler | Words such as roadmap, metrics, retention | Landing pages and pricing sections |
Type words into Custom Input and they're mixed into the filler (words of three letters or more), and your text is placed at the start of the output. That gives you dummy text that sounds like the real topic, such as a pricing page or a recipe site.
Lorem ipsum in HTML
The HTML output type wraps each paragraph in <p>, adds an <h2> heading above it, and adds a <ul> list after every other block. Choose section, article or div under Outer HTML wrapper to put the whole thing inside one container. You can also tick Return HTML output with any other type, so Sentences become separate <p> tags and List becomes a <ul>.
Paste the markup straight into a template or a CMS code view. To tidy the indentation, run it through the HTML formatter, or convert it for a README with HTML to Markdown.
Frequently asked questions
Is lorem ipsum real Latin?
Partly. It's based on real Latin from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC), but words were cut and rearranged, so it doesn't form proper sentences.
Why do designers use dummy text instead of real text?
Real text pulls attention to what it says. Dummy text keeps reviewers focused on layout, fonts and spacing, and it fills space before the final copy is written.
How many words are in a paragraph of lorem ipsum?
With Random lengths on, a paragraph here has 3 to 7 sentences of 6 to 16 words, so roughly 18 to 112 words. With it off, every paragraph is 40 words.
Can I generate lorem ipsum as HTML?
Yes. Choose the HTML output type, or tick Return HTML output with any other type, then select Download HTML to save it as a complete .html page. Plain-text output is saved with each paragraph in its own <p> tag and bullet lines as a <ul> list.
Does the generator save my text?
Only in your browser. With Save recent generations ticked, the last 8 outputs are kept in local storage so you can reload them. Clear History removes them.
Should I replace lorem ipsum before a site goes live?
Yes. Search engines index whatever text is on the page, and placeholder text left on a live page looks unfinished to visitors. Search your templates for "lorem" before launch.
