How to use the tip calculator
- Enter the bill. Type the amount before tax in Bill amount. If you want tax kept separate, put it in Tax / extra charges.
- Choose the tip. Tap a preset from 5% to 25% (15% is selected to start), drag the slider up to 50%, or type an exact figure such as 17.5 in Custom tip %.
- Split the bill. Set Number of people. Turn on Round per-person amount if you'd rather everyone pays a whole number.
- Share the result. Read the grand total and per-person amount in Calculation results, then select Copy summary to paste it into a chat.
How much to tip in the US
In the US, tips make up a large part of many service workers' pay, so tipping is expected for table service. These ranges come from published guides such as Ramsey Solutions' tipping guide and MIT's International Students Office:

Customs differ in other countries, and some restaurants add a service charge to the bill. Check the receipt before tipping so you don't pay twice.
Restaurant tip calculator: should you tip on tax?
Etiquette guides, including the Emily Post Institute, say the tip at a sit-down restaurant can be worked out on the pre-tax total, because tax isn't part of the service. Many people tip on the full amount anyway, and the gap is small.
The calculator follows the pre-tax method by default: the tip is a percentage of Bill amount only, and the tax is added afterwards. Turn on Include tax before tip to calculate the tip on bill plus tax instead.
On a bill of 84.50 with 7.40 tax, an 18% tip is 15.21 on the pre-tax amount or 16.54 on the total including tax.
Split bill calculator example
Three friends have dinner. The food comes to 84.50, tax is 7.40, and they want to leave 18%.
- Tip: 84.50 × 18 ÷ 100 = 15.21.
- Grand total: 84.50 + 7.40 + 15.21 = 107.11.
- Each person: 107.11 ÷ 3 = 35.70 (rounded to the cent). That leaves 1 cent over, so the calculator shows one person paying 35.71 and the shares add up to exactly 107.11.
With Round per-person amount on, each share becomes 36.00, which is easier to pay in cash or by transfer. Round total bill works the same way for the whole check, rounding 107.11 up to 108. Either way the extra 0.89 is added to the tip, so the Total tip card shows 16.10 and the tip, total and shares always add up.

Quick tip percentage math in your head
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%. On a 64 bill, 10% is 6.40. Double it for 20% (12.80), or add half of it for 15% (6.40 + 3.20 = 9.60).
