How to compress WebP images

How much can you compress a WebP image?
Less than a JPG or PNG, because WebP is already an efficient format. Google, which created WebP, reports that lossy WebP files are 25-34% smaller than JPGs of similar quality. Most WebP images on websites were already saved at a moderate quality (Google's own cwebp encoder defaults to 75), so re-saving at a similar setting barely changes their size.
Real savings come from two places: a lower quality setting, or fewer pixels. Halving the width and height leaves a quarter of the pixels, and the file shrinks roughly in step. Watch the Savings line on each card. If a card says Already optimised, the original was already more compressed than your setting, so the tool kept the original file.
How to compress a WebP to 100 KB
A 100 KB target is common for blog images, product thumbnails and forms with an upload cap. Work in this order:
- Enter a Max width that matches where the image will be shown, for example 1200 for a blog post or 800 for a thumbnail.
- Set the quality to 70% and select Compress all.
- Check the Compressed size on each card. If one is still over 100 KB, lower the slider to 60% and select Recompress on that card.
Shrinking the dimensions first keeps the image sharper than pushing the quality very low on a large image.
Compress WebP without losing quality: what's realistic
This WebP compressor re-encodes images in lossy mode, so some detail is always dropped. At 80-90% you won't see it at normal viewing size. Below about 50% you'll start to notice smeared textures and soft edges around text.
Each lossy save adds a little more damage, so compress from the best copy you have. Keep the original WebP (or the PNG or JPG it was made from) and compress a fresh copy whenever you need a different size, instead of compressing the same file again and again.
PNG to WebP: compress and convert in one step
