How to convert WebP to JPG

  1. Add your WebP files. Drag .webp images onto the drop area or select Select images. Up to 500 files or 2 GB per batch.
  2. Check the settings. Output format is set to JPG (.jpg). If your images have transparent parts, pick the fill color under Background color (for JPG). White is the default.
  3. Resize if you want (optional). Enter a Max width and Max height and each image is scaled down to fit them with its proportions kept. Smaller images keep their size unless you tick Allow upscaling. Leave both blank to keep the original size.
  4. Convert and download. Select Convert all, then Download on a card or Download all (ZIP). Use Reconvert on a card after changing a setting.

What is a WebP file, and why won't it open?

WebP is an image format Google introduced in 2010 to make web pages load faster. A WebP photo is usually 25-34% smaller than a JPG of similar quality, so many websites now send WebP images instead of JPGs. When you right-click and save a picture, you often end up with a .webp file even if the site looked like it was showing a JPG.

Browsers handle WebP fine: Safari was the last major one to add support, with Safari 14 in 2020. The trouble starts outside the browser. Older photo editors, some print services and plenty of upload forms on websites still reject .webp files. Converting WebP to JPG gives you a file they all accept.

Keep WebP for images you publish on the web. Change WebP to JPG when a program, printer or form needs it. If you need a transparent background, convert to PNG instead with the WebP to PNG converter.

How to change WebP to JPG on Windows and Mac

For one or two images you can use what's already on your computer. For a folder full of files, the converter above is faster.

Windows

Right-click the .webp file, choose Open with › Paint, then select File › Save as and pick JPEG. Paint saves one image at a time.

Mac

Open the WebP file in Preview, choose File › Export, set Format to JPEG, adjust the quality slider and save. The JPG keeps the WebP's pixel dimensions.

What happens to transparency, animation and quality?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background color you choose. White suits most documents and product photos. Pick a darker color if the image will sit on a dark page, so soft edges blend in.

Animated WebP files convert to a still JPG of the first frame. The JPGs are saved at 92% quality, which keeps them close to the WebP you started with, though they will usually be larger in bytes. If you need them smaller, run the results through the JPG compressor.

All conversion happens in your browser. Your images aren't uploaded, and they're cleared when you close the tab.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a WebP file to JPG for free?

Drop the file into the converter on this page and select Convert all. It's free with no sign-up and no watermark, and nothing is uploaded.

Is WebP to JPEG the same as WebP to JPG?

Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format. The converter saves files with the .jpg extension, which every app treats as JPEG.

Can I convert many WebP images to JPG at once?

Yes. Add up to 500 WebP files or 2 GB, convert them in one go and download a single ZIP.

Why does my converted JPG have a white background?

The WebP had transparent areas and JPG can't store transparency, so they're filled with the background color, white by default. Choose another color before converting, or switch the output to PNG to keep transparency.

Why is the JPG bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses more efficiently than JPG, so the same image needs more bytes as a JPG. That's normal and doesn't mean the quality improved.

Can I convert .webp to JPG on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in Chrome or Safari, tap Select images, and pick the .webp files. The JPGs download to your phone's Downloads or Files app.
