How to convert PNG to WebP

Why convert PNG and JPG to WebP?
Smaller images make pages load faster, and WebP is one of the easiest ways to get there. According to Google, which developed the format, lossy WebP images are 25-34% smaller than comparable JPGs, and lossless WebP images are 26% smaller than PNGs. Every current major browser displays WebP, including Safari since version 14.
The gain is often bigger for PNGs. Many PNGs on websites are photos or detailed graphics that were saved as PNG only to keep a transparent background. As a lossy WebP with transparency, the same image can be a fraction of the size.
Choosing the quality when you convert JPG to WebP or PNG to WebP

Check the stats line after converting. If it says the WebP files are larger than the originals, the source was already well compressed (common with small PNG icons), and you may be better off keeping the original.
Does WebP keep the transparency from PNG?
Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel even in lossy mode, so transparent backgrounds, soft shadows and anti-aliased edges carry over from PNG and SVG files. Nothing is filled in behind them.
SVG files are turned into pixels at their own width and height. If an SVG is small, set a Max width and tick Allow upscaling to render it larger before it's saved as WebP.
Which browsers can create WebP files?
The image to WebP converter needs the browser's own WebP encoder. Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Windows, Mac, Linux and Android have one. Safari, and every browser on iPhone and iPad, can show WebP images but can't save new ones from a web page, and the page will warn you if your browser can't. On an Apple device, use Chrome or Firefox on a Mac, or convert on another computer.
Some places still don't accept WebP, such as older desktop software and some upload forms.
