Page numbers help reviewers cite a report, contract, submission, or scanned packet, but their position and sequence need to match the document rather than cover it. Choose a numbering style, start value, prefix or suffix, page range, placement, margins, color, and font size, then inspect the beginning, middle, and end before saving the numbered copy.
A cover may be unnumbered, introductory pages may use Roman numerals, and the first numbered content page may need to begin at 1 or another value. Use the starting number and page-selection controls deliberately. A number printed on the page is visible content; it does not necessarily change the internal page index shown by a PDF viewer.
Bottom-center placement works for many reports, while outside corners can suit bound documents. Mixed portrait, landscape, or cropped pages need extra review because one margin can land differently. Choose a contrasting color and a modest font size, then confirm that numbers do not overlap footnotes, signatures, tables, crop marks, or existing headers and footers.
Apply numbering to all pages, odd or even pages, or a custom range according to the packet. Check the first affected page, a page with dense footer content, a rotated or unusually sized page, and the final page. When a source document can still be edited, adding numbers there may allow text and margins to reflow more predictably.

Choose a custom page selection that begins after the cover and set the visible starting number you want. Preview the first numbered page because PDF page position and printed number may differ.

The tool draws visible labels on pages. A viewer may still count the file from its first internal page, including covers. Changing internal page labels is a separate PDF feature and is not implied by visible numbering.
